Global Wellness Summit 2019 - Day Three

Anna Bjurstam, a leader in the industry in addition to being a shaman talked about energy medicine, mind-altering substances and connecting with things we cannot see. Science is often disconnection where energy is connection. We can connect with the energy field through the heart, which sends more messages to the brain than vice-versa. Energy medicine must be combined with wellness.

An impressive Chinese Dragon performance opened the summit with vibrant shades of red across the stage. Susie Ellis spoke of the inception of the summit and the evolution of the agenda and growth of the event and it's importance globally.

The research has helped to define and quantify the industry and its global expansion, where just over 10 years ago there was none; wellness was a word that was hardly used and data was scarce. The GWS now has 28 initiatives, such as wellness tourism, sound healing, wellness coaching, Susie shared the news that the GWI has been invited to participate in the World Economic Forum, a huge achievement. "Mission accomplished" Susie states, "wellness has become a global force, what's next?"

ISPA 2019 Day 1

Susan Cain posed the question; “Is the ideal spa owner bold, alpha and gregarious? What about the ideal manager? The ideal healer? Most of the messages that are received by children are that extroversion is the ‘right’ way to be and act. Introversion and extroversion govern who we are, how we act and how we are wired.

Salt is a familiar substance, yet like many ordinary things, it’s taken for granted. To understand its healing properties we must understand its nature and mystical contradictions.

2019 Global Spa & Wellness Trends

Each year, the Global Wellness Summit (GWS) identifies new trends that will have a meaningful impact on the $4.2 trillion wellness industry

Well Fashion – Way Beyond Athleisure
A new era of sustainable, ethical, intelligent, healing, more inclusive and meaningful clothing is on the rise.

The greedy, throwaway fashion machine has a disastrous impact on the environment and humans: the waste, the pollution and the garment workers (mostly women). Less than 1% of clothing material is ever recycled. This model creates a staggering 1.2 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually and dumps 20% of all global wastewater.

Julie Keller Callaghan
Editor-in-Chief & Publisher American Spa

Julie welcomed repeat attendees from last year's first WIW event and new attendees for this year's bigger and better conference.

Sharing some worrying statistics about the inequality of women in executive positions, she advises that networking, mentorship and support are the cornerstones of success and this will change the dynamic.

Banyan Tree Mayakoba, Riviera Maya, Mexico

The beautiful resort of Banyan Tree Mayakoba sits just north of Playa del Carmen and offers an authentic Asian experience to its guests, right here in Mexico. Luxury suites and a variety of restaurants await guests in addition to the stunning and well equipped Banyan Tree Spa. Like the sacred tree, Banyan Tree Spa aims to offer guests a sanctuary for the senses where physical, mental and spiritual renewal can take place.

The impressive private ‘Rainforest hydrothermal circuit’ at Banyan Tree Mayakoba comprises a cascading rain shower walk over a foot-stimulating pebbled floor, aroma steam, sauna, hamam with body and hair masks, invigorating experience showers, an ice fountain and brine cavern. Enjoy these before finishing up in the vitality pool with strong hydrotherapy jets and hot Jacuzzis to work on muscle tension.

A visit to Chablé, Yucatan is ideal for a wellness experience, with relaxation, spa, gastronomy, yoga, visiting wellness specialists and a variety of daily activities for guests to choose from. During my stay, I had a consultation with Paul Emery, whose technique has proven successful with many, healing old injuries and releasing various points of tension around the body. My friend and I were invited to take part in a Mayan ritual with the ‘Abuela Maya’ - Mayan Grandmother. After the traditional ritual of facing the four cardinal points, the sky above and mother earth below, the ‘Abuela’ asked if we had any specific questions we would like answering. The questions flowed and she shared her wisdom and some predictions for the future for each of us; I’m still waiting for some of mine to materialize but it certainly created a fun, personalized experience for us to enjoy.

Puerto Vallarta, land of sun, sea, sand and traditions, presents a spa with nuances of Jalisco. Where ingredients and rituals are created from the iconic plant recognized worldwide, which is also used to make Mexico’s famous tequila drink: the agave.

Maiavé Spa takes inspiration from Mayahuel, the beautiful Aztec goddess who, in her transformation, chose the fertile soil of Jalisco as her home. On the night of a full moon she became a majestic agave and provided for her beloved people, food, drink and shade.

The General session opened with an enchanting performance from spoken word artist Pacia Elaine, before ISPA chairman, Garrett Mersberger took the stage to welcome the 2000+ attendees and present the ISPA 2018 Visionary Award posthumously to Lori Hutchinson of Hutchinson Consulting who connected people and touched lives across the spa industry for decades before passing in 2016.

Shawn Achor spoke passionately about happiness as a choice. We all have a genetic predisposition to a certain level of happiness and there are ways we can maximize this. Different to pleasure, happiness is the joy we feel when moving towards our potential. You can experience happiness even when life is not pleasurable. Starting a company or running a marathon, for example, can be painful and un-pleasurable experiences, but can result in immense happiness. A brief, fun experiment proved how easy it is to influence others by smiling. Not only do smiles spread, but stress, nervousness and negativity also spread just as easily. What is interesting in terms of human connection is that with a friend next to us, the brain actually perceives challenges as easier to overcome.

Borgo Egnazia Puglia, Italy

Borgo Egnazia stands true to its tagline, it’s like nowhere else. Situated on the southern Italian coast of Puglia, the resort boasts a collection of impressive villas, spacious rooms and cute 2-storey ‘casettas’ all laid out like a traditional Pulgian village in uniform cream-colored stone with intertwining cobblestone streets and seemingly secret pathways. At the heart of the Borgo (meaning village in Italian) is the central piazza, which comes alive at night with special dinners and events held for guests. The timeless cream and white décor is simple yet elegantly chic and attention to detail around the resort is impeccable. The small chapel to the side of the piazza is home to weddings, celebrations and in our case, a spectacular vegetarian dinner prepared for the press delegates and PR team enjoying the resort after the Global Wellness Summit.

Lefay Resort & Spa is situated in a petite village overlooking the stunning Lake Garda in northern Italy. The air is clear and crisp and the views expansive and breathtaking; you cannot help but feel healthy from the moment you arrive at this striking destination. Meditation & Brainwave Entrainment

The benefits of meditation are well known across the spa and wellness industry and the spa clientele we often receive are becoming more knowledgeable all the time. There are many ways we can incorporate meditation into the spa experience for our guests; these include guided meditations, providing a Zen meditation space and mindfulness activities like mandala coloring, labyrinth walks etc.

If we want to encourage our guests to take it a step further we can introduce technology into their meditation practice – this may seem counter intuitive however the latest brainwave entrainment and meditation feedback devices can help those who struggle with the practice of quieting the mind.

ISPA 2017

The 2017 International Spa Association Conference & Expo was hosted at Mandalay Bay Las Vegas, on October 16-18. Almost 2300 leaders in spa and wellness from 31 countries gathered at the event to hear 40 speakers and see 220 exhibiting companies. 16000 meals were donated to children via the FEED bag partnership and over 100,000 USD was raised to support the ISPA Foundation.

Day one commenced with keynote speaker Amy Cuddy on the main stage. Cuddy’s research has shown how our body language can affect how others perceive us. However, more interestingly, it also affects how we see ourselves. By ‘power posing’ – standing in a powerful posture of confidence - for just two minutes we can boost our feelings of confidence, and increase our chances of success at whatever we are about to undertake. So, before your next meeting, job interview or speech, give this a try!

Upon entering the resort grounds, manicured lawns and lines of henequen cactus greet guests on the drive to the small reception building. A display of artifacts traditional to the area decorates the walls of the reception; henequen rope, weaving thread, candles and beekeeper masks and tools all set the scene.

Global Wellness Summit Day Three

Hotels, Alternative Accommodations and Wellness: Jan D. Freitag, Senior Vice President, STR, Inc., U.S.

Jan Jan2

The report card for the US hotel industry, STR compiles market data for the industry. Gyms are a commodity and prevalent in mid to high-end hotels, but less so in economy hotels, which incidentally are also more likely to have ‘smoking permitted’ rooms. Spas of course are found in luxury and upscale properties, but in a sea of brands, how can a hotel brand differentiate itself? Every brand has their own answer, create a wellness brand, such as Even hotels, Westin Workout. The alternative is to buy a brand, such as Hyatt acquiring Miraval and exhale spas. Luxury hotels with spas charge a significantly higher room rate, however the relationship is tenuous – do hotels get to charge more because they have a spa, or are spas more prevalent in hotels that charge more?

Global Wellness Summit Day Two

My day kicked off with a group breakfast with Global Wellness Day Ambassadors and Key Supporters, a big surprise is coming later today!

Dr. Andrew Weil: How To Really Help People Make Healthy Lifestyle Choices

The US does not have a healthcare system, but a disease management system, spending more than almost every other developed nation. Prevention doesn’t pay; wellness doesn’t pay. How can we encourage people to live a more healthy life? If information can be presented in a way that connects with people, they will move in the right direction. To deliver the message, you must embody health and demonstrate health. To improve your habits, spend more time in the company of people who embody these habits. This works for diet, exercise, mental wellness and happiness. Governments need to support these health messages with taxes and subsidies in the right place. Mexico has seen success with its tax on sugary drinks. Fashion is powerful, how can we make wellness fashionable and fun? If we can recruit celebrities to promote a wellness lifestyle this can encourage positive change.

Sprawling across 7000 acres in the beautiful area of La Romana, a short drive from Punta Cana, sits Casa de Campo Resort & Villas. The resort offers a wide variety of rooms and suites, including one and two bedroom condos, golf lodge rooms and villas, all of which come with a complimentary 4 person golf cart. The golf cart is essential for getting around the idyllic grounds of Casa de Campo to visit the multitude of restaurants, the three golf courses, beach club, pools, meeting rooms and, of course, the spa and fitness facilities.

Emphasizing harmony rather than balance, guests are encouraged to immerse themselves in nature and benefit from the phytoncides, a substance emitted by trees and plants which can help to calm the nervous system.

5 Ways To Bring Meditation Into Your Spa

Meditation is an excellent way of creating a sense of calm, clarity and wellbeing. In spas, we try to provide the same thing to our guests. Why not incorporate elements of mediation to increase the benefits of your spa experience for your guests.

1. Create a meditation space or ‘zen room’
More than a relaxation room, a meditation space should provide guests with a place to sit and meditate in a quiet environment. Lighting should be low and seating options like meditation cushions and chairs for those not accustomed to sitting cross-legged should be available.

2. Provide guided meditation options
A menu of guided meditations of various length and intention allows the guest to choose their experience. This can be done with an iPad and headphones or via an on-demand system built into your relaxation area, meditation room or even played within the treatment room during your guest’s spa experience.

SIENNA: We go thru some amazing, jam-packed times in Jamaica. Like all destination areas, we are busy during several months of the year and have some months where things slow down. How do you keep your team motivated after each busy season and during slow times?

The health and wellness industry is always changing. One area that is constantly developing is the technology available to the public. In this article we examine how technology has changed consumer's health and wellness habits.

Every year a new development is created that changes how the public monitors their health and wellness. Where once technology would only give information on how to lead a healthier lifestyle, now it is actively aiding customers in pursuing their goals.

Innovations such as the SmartMat for yoga are taking the information once confined to the gym and putting it into people’s homes. Tech Crunch reported that the SmartMat recognizes when a yoga pose is wrong and can automatically provide the right information to correct it. The advantage of this is that people who are uncomfortable with visiting a gym now have the means to try yoga without paying for a session with an instructor.

Spa Review: Mahekal Beach Resort, Mexico

The Mahekal Beach Resort is located in the town of Playa del Carmen, just steps from the north end of its famous 5th avenue. With 800 feet of beachfront and 196 guest rooms, including individual Palapa style bungalows and premium suites just steps from the water’s edge, the Mayan inspired, Revive Spa at Mahekal Beach Resort is set among lush tropical gardens of the resort. The spa offers a variety of experiences such as body wraps, exfoliations, facials, massages, couples journeys and signature treatments in addition to beauty services and yoga classes. Treatments at Revive Spa incorporate native Mayan culture and indigenous homegrown ingredients like medicinal herbs, aloe and copal incense. Revive Spa is laid out in a round configuration imitating the philosophy of the Mayans.

Encompassing 2,500 square feet, guests are soothed with the sounds of water and wind chimes. Bohemian gypsy designs create a welcoming ambience infused with colorful Mexican accents, antique wood furniture, subtle lighting, louvered windows and a palapa style roof. Above the central elevated platform is a fiber optic lit ceiling, reminiscent of glowing stars, that guests can enjoy as they relax, pre or post treatment in the warm Jacuzzi.

Spa Review: Jamaica Inn

As you arrive at the renowned Jamaica Inn, you are immediately welcomed ‘home’. Whether you are a returning guest or a first time visitor, the staff invite you to feel comfortable in your surroundings, and go out of their way to ensure you do just that during your stay.

The timelessly elegant Jamaica Inn has been in operation since 1950 and has welcomed royalty, politicians and celebrities alike, who enjoy the intimacy and privacy the resort provides. The 48 suites and cottages, decorated and painted in crisp white and Wedgewood blue encircle a small, secluded bay on the outskirts of Ocho Rios (‘Ochy’ to the locals). Each suite is afforded spectacular views of the turquoise blue Caribbean Sea.

The Carillon Miami Wellness Resort sits a on a 750 meter stretch of private beach overlooking the ocean and boasts a multitude of wellness facilities and offerings to suit all activity levels. On arrival at the resort, guests are provided with a activity schedule packed full of wellness related endeavors such as yoga, Pilates, meditation, cycling, zumba, ballet, strength training, kettlebells, TRX, barre, aerobics, rock climbing and pool based fitness classes. I chose to try a rock climbing class in the afternoon and sunrise meditation followed by yoga the next morning. With expert instructors always on hand to provide guidance and ensure safety, guests at the Carillon are always in good hands.

In addition to the impressive list of 40+ activities per day, the Carillon boasts an expansive fitness area with ocean view and state of the art equipment including Technogym ARTIS cardio machines and Technogym Kinesis functional training equipment. There are several pools to choose from at The Carillon. Family pools are at ground level while the adults only Atlantic Rooftop Pool provides the perfect setting for a morning aqua fitness class or a relaxing quiet place to spend the day.

Customized Spa Scrubs

With the rising trend in spa treatment customization, an apothecary style scrub selection is an excellent way to make bespoke spa services for your guests, and get them involved in the fun!

Styles of scrubs
Ideally your scrub bar should provide a range of textures and granularities for guests.

• Sugar scrub: choose from course or fine, brown, white or demerara
• Salt: sea salt, or Himalayan, course or fine, there’s a salt for everyone
• Rice: once ground, this fine powder scrub is an excellent exfoliator with anti-inflammatory and absorbent properties
• Coffee grounds: they have a great aroma and are ideal for slimming and invigorating anti-cellulite treatments, mix with sugar for added texture
• Ground Cacao nibs: an excellent choice for spas in Mexico, adding an indigenous ingredient.
• Beans (or corn): Any ground, dry bean can be used as an exfoliator and is a great way to incorporate a sense of place by choosing one local to the area. Perfect for Central and South America
• Oatmeal: perfect for sensitive skin, ground oatmeal is a gentle scrub with anti-inflammatory benefits.
• Beach sand: If you have an abundant source of sand, why not use it?

Founder and CEO of All4Spas, Adriana works with many recognized hotel chains advising on equipment for spas and wellness centers around Mexico and Central America. Adriana is a board member for the Latin American Spa Association; key supporter of Global Wellness Day and representative for the GWI Wellness for Cancer initiative.

The Global Wellness Summit invites wellness-inspired, entrepreneurial students to pitch the most innovative – and viable – wellness concept; $10,000 in prize money
to be awarded to top three finalists at 2017 conference in Palm Beach, FL, USA (Oct 9-11)

The Global Wellness Summit (GWS), an annual gathering of international leaders to positively shape the future of the $3.7 trillion global wellness economy, announced submissions are now being accepted for the 2017 “Shark Tank of Wellness” student competition. Last year marked the successful debut of the new Shark Tank-style competition, attracting over 70 entries from 17 countries, all vying to be one of three finalists to compete for a total of $10,000 in prize money.

The contest is open to university students (undergraduate or post-graduate students are eligible) around the world and submissions are being accepted until May 15, 2017. Students are required to submit a written application along with a short video highlighting an innovative concept, product or service for the wellness industry. The top three finalists, and their professors, will be flown to the 2017 GWS at The Breakers, Palm Beach, FL, USA to compete for $10,000 in prize money (1st prize $5,000; 2nd prize $3,000; 3rd prize $2,000). Full rules and regulations can be found on the Global Wellness Summit website here.

Students will be judged on the business viability of their concept, which can serve any aspect of the wellness spectrum – from technology to architecture to spa design – by a panel of real-world wellness experts who will question the students in front of a live audience of over 500 executive business and thought leaders in global wellness.

Returning sponsors of the “Shark Tank of Wellness” competition, include Chiva-Som International Health Resort (Thailand), ESPA (UK), Iredale Mineral Cosmetics (USA) and ResortSuite (Canada). The GWS also welcomes new sponsor, Jacqueline Piotaz Switzerland. Executives from each company will serve as “Wellness Sharks.”

“The success of the inaugural ‘Shark Tank of Wellness’ competition was overwhelming and truly underlined just how has global ‘wellness innovation’ really is,” said Susie Ellis, GWS Chairman and CEO. “Whittling the field down to just three finalists is a huge, but extremely gratifying, challenge – and I know both the GWS team and our “wellness sharks” are looking forward to reviewing this year’s thought-provoking and inspirational entries!”

There is no fee to enter. In addition to the prize money, airfare and hotel accommodations, all three finalists and their professors will attend the three-day conference, including all general sessions, breakout discussions, industry forums and gala social events (a USD $3,080 value; limit one student and one professor per team).

Last year’s top prize of $5,000 was awarded to Shahrin Ali Raivi from North South University, Bangladesh, for Mukto Sanitary Napkin, a concept to make sustainable sanitary napkins accessible to the 80% of women throughout Bangladesh who currently rely on unsanitary and ineffective options, including sand, leaves, mud and unsterilized rags. Shahrin’s concept makes use of left over materials from the country’s cotton industry. Two runner-ups, Regina Tarany and Svejetlana Radakovic, both from IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems, Austria, received $2,500 each and their concepts, including “TreatAdvisor” and “Spa Watch.”

The Global Wellness Summit attracts leaders from every sector of the wellness industry: spa, hospitality, tourism, beauty, fitness, nutrition, finance, education, environment, medicine, architecture, workplace wellness, wellness communities and technology.
