Outside it might be 19th century colonial Mexico, but when you walk inside the slate green lobby of the Hotel Matilda, you\u2019ll know you\u2019re in the 21st century. The hotel is stylish, trendy, and very modern and the spa downstairs continues the hip minimalistic style of the hotel.<\/p>\n
The Spa at Hotel Matilda is a 4700-sq. foot haven with 4 treatment rooms, a private hammam (Turkish wet bath), two couple\u2019s suites, and indoor and outdoor lounges, all with a sleek upscale and modern ambience. The spa is led by the super-knowledgeable and charming Spa Director Margarita Valderrama, who beams with pride as she shows off this New York-style oasis in San Miguel de Allende, in the middle of Mexico\u2019s high desert.<\/p>\n
Drawing on the extensive wealth of knowledge she acquired studying at the world-famous Chopra Institute (founded by wellness guru Deepak Chopra), Margarita, an acupuncturist as well as a homeopath, oversees not only the Spa at Hotel Matilda, but also the new Spa en Vivo, Hotel Matilda\u2019s holistic destination spa a few miles outside of San Miguel. At Spa en Vivo, Margarita combines hydrotherapy, Watsu massage, an indigenous Temescal, and her expertise as a Qi Gong instructor, to create a wellness destination under the open sky surrounded by herbs, aromatherapy and plants.<\/p>\n
Upon check-in at the chic Spa at Hotel Matilda, each guest is handed a cool towel infused with lavender and one single perfect white rose, symbolizing innocence, purity and love. A green drink made from local products \u2013 nopales, grapefruit, pineapple, and celery – detoxifies the body prior to indulging in Mexico\u2019s only Hamman treatment. This Middle-Eastern inspired self-treatment begins with exfoliation of the body using a mixture of stimulating essential oils. This is followed by a hot steam shower on a luxurious couch on which you scrub yourself from head to toe.<\/p>\n
The Spa at Matilda uses the indigenous ingredients native to Mexico \u2013 A Vanilla, Lavender and Honey body wrap; a Caf\u00e9 Latte exfoliation with coffee and vanilla; a Nopal body wrap that penetrates deep into the nucleus of cells to increase the body\u2019s cellular longevity.<\/p>\n
The excellent training of the staff is very apparent. As Margarita says, \u201cI believe the most important ingredient in my spa is my staff. My therapists are well trained, most of them by me here at Matilda and previously in Cabo San Lucas. As a team, we hold hands, meditate, pray and offer our job of the day to the Universe. We cannot give love if we don\u2019t have it inside. I am in love with this place.\u201d<\/p>\n
