Wellness for Teens: The Role of Spas

The movement of inclusion for younger guests in a spa setting is finally gaining the traction, with spas recognizing the urgent need to address the mental health of pre-teens, teens and young adults.

It is not enough for spas to simply remove age restrictions when it comes to allowing younger guests to enjoy the spa and facilities; it’s essential to have specific programming to address the physical, emotional and mental health needs of this younger demographic.

The ‘Wellness for Children’ initiative has created a series of touch and touchless protocols to enhance the wellbeing of families. Engaging the whole family in healthy habits can be fun, enlightening and impactful. Evidence suggests that multigenerational health experiences, including workshops for parents and grandparents and adapted massage for teenagers who play sports, for kids who are sedentary, neurodivergent or experiencing mental health challenges can all be accommodated with the correct training.

As part of these protocols, assessing posture, addressing conditions like tech neck – pain caused by poor position due to overuse of technology – and improving sleep quality by reducing anxiety are key to supporting children’s physical and mental wellness. Engaging the senses through art, music, dance, cooking, and relaxing together can lead to positive behavior modification.

Social wellness is the future of wellness. Coming together to enjoy immersive, joyful experiences has been shown to support mental, physical and emotional health.
