A Journey Through the Senses
Neurologists agree on at least nine senses: vision, hearing, smell, taste, touch, balance or Equilibrioception (to maintain equilibrium), proprioception (awareness of our body’s position in space), temperature or thermoception (detection of changes in temperature) and pain or nociception. However, different methods of neurological classification can yield as many as 21 senses, also including:
• Pressure
• Itch
• Kinesthetic sense: awareness of the position and movement of muscles and joints
• Body awareness: the awareness of the body as a whole
• Interoception: perceive and interpret internal bodily sensations, such as heartbeat and digestion
• Stretch receptors: a type of stretch receptor that senses dilation of blood vessels
• Chemoreceptors: these trigger an area of the medulla in the brain that’s involved in detecting blood-borne hormones and drugs
• Thirst
• Hunger
• Magnetoreception: the ability to detect magnetic fields
• Electroreception: to perceive and interpret electrical fields
• Time: to perceive the passage of time
Multisensory rooms
Sensory rooms offer a versatile environment designed for immersive experiences aiming for guests’ relaxation and rejuvenation while targeting different senses. They incorporate an array of elements such as light, sound, aroma, tactile surfaces, visual effects, and temperature.
These rooms can complement any spa and wellness activities like yoga and meditation, enhancing the benefits of the treatment and allowing for limitless combinations for each guest’s preferences and needs.
Multisensory Experiences
By simultaneously stimulating multiple senses, more impactful experiences can be created. These experiences can be tailored to the guest’s needs, addressing specific therapeutic goals.
Multisensory experiences transcend traditional spa experiences that typically involve aroma and music when providing a massage. Multisensory experiences engage multiple senses simultaneously.
