There is a wide diversity of touchless therapies gaining popularity now as we settle into the ‘re-opening’ process around the world. There is a certain inherent irony because the wellness industry is, on some level, based in touch therapies. As a response to COVID-19, the wellness industry responded with an accelerated turn to wellness technologies and energy medicine, as two seemingly opposite ends of the spectrum of limiting, or eliminating, touch in treatments. Wellness technologies can be considered therapeutic in that they are shown to influence the autonomic nervous system and affect sleep and relaxation, brainwave and vagus nerve function. Sound and vibroacoustic therapies including gong baths, cymatherapy, RIFE and biofield tuning are gaining traction and are offered as live experiences as well as via digital sound waves. Light-based therapies are popular, using LED and biophotonic light to affect mood and mitigate oxidative stress. Diverse quantum healing technologies that offer bioanalysis and biofeedback, such as LIFE Systems, SCIO and Biowell can provide unique combinations of analysis and therapy. Others bring variations on detoxification and cellular regeneration such as the Gharieni iDome, ozone chambers, and molecular hydrogen inhalation. Distance healing, reiki, and theta-healing are touchless therapies considered more ‘energy medicine’ and work on the premise that energy is not confined to a space so is accessible and malleable at a distance through consciousness and intention. Lastly, touchless therapies such as halotherapy rooms, biophilia cabins, outdoor therapeutic gardens and yoga decks replace traditional treatment rooms.
It is difficult to estimate the percentages of sales that the touchless therapies could represent as each property and region is unique. As the popularity of these treatments continues to grow, their success will depend on the ability to create comprehensive experiences that appeal to guests.
