The International SPA Association (ISPA) Foundation announced the launch of a groundbreaking spa workforce study at the 2017 ISPA Conference & Expo being held at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas October 16-18. The Global Wellness Summit (GWS), the annual event focused on the $3.7 trillion global wellness economy, wrapped up its incredibly successful 3-day Summit earlier this month at The Breakers Palm Beach, FL. The event, which attracted a record 600+ health and wellness leaders from 43 countries, included an inspirational “Wellness Moonshot,” a call-to-action to rid the world of preventable disease. Former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Richard Carmona, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Dr. Andrew Weil and Weight Watchers’ CEO Mindy Grossman were just some of the luminaries that voiced their strong support for this massive, yet urgently needed, goal.

Lifestyle related diseases and the continuously skyrocketing cost of healthcare are creating a global crisis that is affecting us both physically and mentally. The stark reality is that roughly 70% of all deaths each year are a result of preventable diseases (CDC), while the global cost of largely preventable chronic disease could reach $47 trillion by 2030, according to the World Economic Forum. On the opening day of the 2017 Global Wellness Summit, health and wellness leaders united behind the first global commitment to achieve a world free of preventable disease, a moonshot that is arguably as urgent as it is massive in scope.

The report card for the US hotel industry, STR compiles market data for the industry. Gyms are a commodity and prevalent in mid to high-end hotels, but less so in economy hotels, which incidentally are also more likely to have ‘smoking permitted’ rooms. Spas of course are found in luxury and upscale properties, but in a sea of brands, how can a hotel brand differentiate itself? Every brand has their own answer, create a wellness brand, such as Even hotels, Westin Workout. The alternative is to buy a brand, such as Hyatt acquiring Miraval and exhale spas. Luxury hotels with spas charge a significantly higher room rate, however the relationship is tenuous – do hotels get to charge more because they have a spa, or are spas more prevalent in hotels that charge more?

My day kicked off with a group breakfast with Global Wellness Day Ambassadors and Key Supporters, a big surprise is coming later today!

 

Dr. Andrew Weil: How To Really Help People Make Healthy Lifestyle Choices

 

The US does not have a healthcare system, but a disease management system, spending more than almost every other developed nation. Prevention doesn’t pay; wellness doesn’t pay. How can we encourage people to live a more healthy life? If information can be presented in a way that connects with people, they will move in the right direction. To deliver the message, you must embody health and demonstrate health. To improve your habits, spend more time in the company of people who embody these habits. This works for diet, exercise, mental wellness and happiness. Governments need to support these health messages with taxes and subsidies in the right place. Mexico has seen success with its tax on sugary drinks. Fashion is powerful, how can we make wellness fashionable and fun? If we can recruit celebrities to promote a wellness lifestyle this can encourage positive change.
